Presenting on Campus

Introduction
The UNO Counseling and Career Center encourages employers to make their presence known on campus by offering company presentations and workshops, or by becoming a member of our speakers bureau. Such events provide excellent opportunities for employers to network with potential candidates and spread the word about their organizations. Please keep in mind the following general requirements for company presentations and workshops:

  • All Company Presentations scheduled at UNO must take place after 2 p.m.
  • Unless otherwise arranged, company presentations will take place in the University Center.
  • Companies/organizations must coordinate their catering through ARAMARK Campus Dining at (504) 280-6079. Outside food or food delivered to campus is against the agreement UNO has with ARAMARK.
  • Regarding refreshments offered to students attending company presentations, the UNO Counseling and Career Center endorses the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) Principles for Professional Conduct which states that "Serving alcohol should not be part of the recruitment process." We ask you to voluntarily abide by the NACE Principles.
Company Presentations
Employers are encouraged to schedule company presentations that will allow students and alumni an opportunity to meet and greet you and learn more about your organization. Most presentations are done in cooperation with campus recruiting or interviewing whereby the employer has a chance to meet candidates and answer questions before the interviews. When completing the Company Presentation Request Form, please make sure you consider the following before submitting the form:

Have you arranged for On Campus Recruiting?
If so, consider coordinating your date for recruiting with your company presentation.

Is the Company Presentation open or closed?
Open presentations are intended for any interested students who may want to attend the event, regardless of recruiting requirements (e.g. GPA, major, etc.). Closed presentations are intended only for those being interviewed or those that meet the specific criteria for interviewing.

How is the Company Presentation going to enhance your recruiting?
Companies often schedule presentations to coincide with the fall or spring career fair as a way to increase recognition to their career fair presence. Companies also often hold presentations three or more weeks before their interview date to create awareness, talk to candidates face-to-face and even collect résumés outside of the online process. This tends to create even more excitement about the interview schedule because there is additional advertising for the event. Another option is to schedule the presentation the day before your scheduled interviews. This provides an opportunity to meet and interact with potential candidates, including those who may not have met the minimum requirements to submit their résumés online. Of course, if your main goal is to introduce your company to the UNO community,a general presentation is best. You can even collect résumés at the presentation and then decide if there is enough interest to schedule on-campus interviews later in the semester.

How will you publicize the event?
The UNO Counseling and Career Center can help with publicizing your event. Employer information sessions are publicized to students on-line through the Opportunities Database. While we are unable to require students to participate and, as such, cannot guarantee participation, we strongly encourage students to attend employer information sessions. Please keep in mind, too, that students may have scheduling conflicts which would prevent their participation, so a lack of participation is not necessarily an indication of lack of interest.

Career-Related Workshops
The UNO Counseling and Career Center invites all employers to take part in a unique opportunity that will allow currents students to benefit from your knowledge and experience about recruiting and job searching. By offering and/or sponsoring a career workshop, you'll have an opportunity to share your expertise and discuss opportunities with your company at the same time. Here's How it Works:

Step 1: Determine a Topic
Suggested topics include:

  • Resume Writing
  • Interviewing Skills
  • Behavioral/Situational Interviewing Skills
  • Dressing for Business
  • Cover Letter Writing
  • Preparing for a Group Interview
  • Job Search Communications (letters, emails, thank you cards, etc.)
  • Dining and Business Etiquette
  • Turning Leadership Skills into Career Success
  • Preparing for a Job Search
  • Negotiating the Job Offer
  • or you may create a topic of your own.

Please Note: We do require that we be allowed to review your workshop prior to the presentation.

Step 2: Schedule a Date
Just complete the Workshop Request Form and fax it to the UNO Counseling and Career Center (504-280-6422) and we will add you to the schedule of events. We can only honor dates that are at least two weeks in advance to allow for proper advertising and promotions. Presentations at UNO are typically offered from 12:30-1:30PM, Mondays - Thursdays. The UNO Counseling and Career Center will advertise the workshop on the Opportunities Database and within campus departments to alert students of the opportunity.

Step 3: Coordinate Handouts and other Materials
The UNO Counseling and Career Center can help coordinate having materials copied and ready for the presentation. Please contact Adrienne Mustiful, PhD at 504-280-6225 for more information.

Step 4: Present and Enjoy
Please plan on arriving at least 20 minutes prior to the presentation. This will provide an opportunity to review any last minute details and give you an opportunity to interact with attendees.

Speakers Bureau
We need your expertise! Employers and recruiters usually have a wealth of information about their industries to share with students, faculty and alumni. We invite recruiters to join our Speakers Bureau. Upon joining, your name will be entered into a database of individuals available upon invitation to speak in classes, student organization meetings or other university gatherings. The UNO Counseling and Career Center will only release your information to qualified and authorized sources within the University of New Orleans. Only your name and email address will be released once the identity of the person making the request has been identified. Please contact Adrienne Mustiful, PhD at 504-280-6225 for more information or to sign-up with our Speakers Bureau.
