When thinking about interviewing on campus, it is a good idea to clarify your recruiting goals your goals prior to contacting the UNO Counseling and Career Center. If this is your first time recruiting, you may want to consider the following:
- What is the process at our company to bring someone aboard?
- What position(s) am I trying to fill?
- How much time do I want to spend identifying candidates?
- What majors will best suit the positions I am trying to fill?
- Who are the decision makers?
- Who will decide who gets an interview?
- Who will interview the students?
Pre-Select - Before being allowed to submit a résumé into our system for consideration for an interview, applicants must meet certain criteria. For example, a company may require that a student be a Marketing major, with at least a 2.75 GPA to be allowed to submit their résumé. A Management major with a 3.00 GPA could NOT submit unless the company accepted Management majors in their selection criteria. Companies can screen on the following aspects when setting up an interview schedule: major, GPA, graduation date, and citizenship
Open - Open interviews do not specify any particular criteria for scheduling an interview. When a student views and becomes interested in your interview schedule, they will sign-up for a time slot regardless of their personal and academic attributes.
Résumé Drop - With a résumé drop, the résumés of interested candidates are made available to the employer prior to setting an interview date in order to determine if there is interest in the position and if there are suitable candidates seeking interviews. For example, a company may set a Résumé Drop Deadline, look over the résumés and then choose to interview on campus.
Assuming that you have thought about your plans for recruiting, the next steps will be pretty simple. Normally a company will select a date for conducting the interview, post job or position information and then create an interview schedule. The interviews are typically 20, 30, 45 or 60 minutes in length.
Step 1: Set a Date
Set a date on which you would like to conduct your on-campus interviews with the UNO Counseling and Career Center. Recruiting usually starts after the Fall Career Expo and continues into early November during the fall semester and after the Mardi Gras Invitational continuing for several weeks in the spring semester.
Step 2: Complete the On-Campus Recruitment Request Form
Submit your request using the On-Campus Recruiting Request Form.
Step 4: Determine How You Will Advertise On Campus
The UNO Counseling and Career Center recommends that employers attend a career fair prior to scheduling on-campus interviews, if at all possible. Career fairs provide an excellent opportunity for face-to-face contact with potential candidates. Employers might also consider scheduling an on-campus presentation as a means of attracting potential candidates prior to interviewing. While we cannot guarantee attendance at any presentations, we will be happy to assist with advertising for the event.
Step 5: Select Candidates
Selection of candidates for interviews is best accomplished using the UNO Opportunities Database. Please contact Adrienne Mustiful, PhD if you require assistance with the selection of candidates.
Step 6: Prepare for Your Visit
When your registration for on-campus interviews is approved, you'll receive a confirmation packet from our office. Please retain and review the packed in preparation for your interviews as this will provide important and helpful information including a copy of the interview schedule and other helpful information. about the the interviews then you are familiar with the particulars of the interview schedule. However, if someone else in the company is conducting the interviews, please prepare them by giving them a copy of the confirmation letter from Career Development, a copy of the interview schedule, a copy of the resumes, etc.
The UNO Counseling and Career Center follows all state and federal EEOC guidelines and requires employers recruiting at UNO to do the same.. As such, please be very specific with regard to citizenship requirements of the students you intend to interview. If you can only hire US citizens, please be specific in your request to only accept those résumés of students meeting that criteria. The UNO Counseling and Career Center cannot place any screening mechanism on résumé selection after résumés have been posted.
In compliance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), the UNO Counseling and Career Center cannot release information about student GPA's directly to employers. The student must release that information themselves at the time of request.
If you require a transcript for interviewing, please add that request to the On Campus Interviewing form at time of reservation. We will communicate that need with students before they come for interviewing. Students are the ONLY individuals that can provide transcripts to employers whether in person or by mail, directly from the Registrar's Office..
The UNO Counseling and Career Center requests that all applicants be honest when reporting their GPA's on their résumés and in the Opportunities Database. However, we do not check GPA's for accuracy.
On Campus Interviews are intended for current UNO students and UNO alumni. If an employer wishes to interview students from another university, they are required to discuss with the UNO Counseling and Career Center director prior to setting the interview.
Interviews will not be confirmed for dates during university holidays or breaks. The Fall Break will be used only in the case of an emergency such as in the event of a hurricane evacuation requiring that interviews be rescheduled.
All interviews will be on the main campus of the University of New Orleans unless otherwise arranged with the employer. Interview rooms in the UNO Counseling and Career Center are intended for one-on-one interviews. Special, advance arrangements will be required for employers wishing to schedule group interviews or two-on-one interviews.
Companies are advised to allow at least 3 weeks between reservation confirmation and the actual interview date to allow more time for publicizing the event.
Generally, On-Campus Interviews are scheduled for Full-Time, Internship or Cooperative Education positions. Employers wishing to schedule interviews for Part-Time positions are asked to contact , then we will schedule a date and reserve a room for you. The employer would be required to set-up interview time slots with the potential candidates on their own.
The UNO Counseling and Career Center requests that all third-party Recruiting firms to abide by the NACE Principals for Third-Party Recruiters as outlined in their general organizational structure.
