Over the 20 years, employment in the City of New Orleans has been effected by regional and national events that have changed the climate of hiring for open positions. These include, for example, the decline in Gulf oil drilling (twice), the tragedy of September 11th, and most recently Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. The staff at the UNO Office of Career Development is certainly aware of the difficulties that face many employers, especially those that are hiring individuals to fill part-time and service industry positions as well as full-time positions. However, please keep the following in mind: 1. UNO students for the most part are local students and for the most part are employed somewhere even before they enter the university. Events like FreshFest are the best ways to capture any unemployed students for part-time positions. 2. Very few alumni and students are unemployed currently. Housing is still an issue and living in New Orleans right now requires a substantial income to afford the high cost of rent in the city. 3. Students who are unemployed are not finding it difficult to find jobs in the city. Everyone is hiring. The traffic in and out of the Office of Career Development is non-existent. 4. Alumni who were unemployed prior to Katrina have found employment outside of New Orleans. If they returned to the city, then they had to return with a job in hand to pay for rent and other living expenses. 5. High technical and skill related areas such as accounting, computer science and engineering are in demand all across the country. Any alumni or recent grads unemployed in those areas before the storm, more than lilkely found employment elsewhere or returned to the city with a job in hand. We will work with you as much as possible to assist you with meeting your needs. Although we are not a placement agency, staffing firm or employment office, we will market your available positions through our websites as much as possible.
